Creamy Garlic Au Gratin Potatoes

5 large potatoes, sliced into 1/4 inch slices
1 onion, finely diced
salt & pepper to taste
1/2 tsp garlic powder
3 tbsp butter
3 tbsp flour
2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
4 slices Provolone cheese

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Generously butter the bottom and sides of a 1 1/2 quart casserole dish and set aside.

In a medium size saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.

Whisk in the flour, salt and pepper, stirring constantly with a whisk for one minute. Whisk in the milk. Cook until mixture has thickened. Whisk in garlic powder. Adjust seasonings, if necessary, to taste.

Stir in the chedder cheese, and continue stirring until melted, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and set the cheese sauce aside.

Add one layer of the sliced potatoes into the bottom of the casserole dish.
Top with 1/2 of the diced onions.

Add enough of your cheese sauce to just cover the potatoes.

Add another layer of potatoes.

Add all 4 slices of provolone cheese over the potatoes.

Add the remaining layer of diced onions.

Add the last layer of potatoes and top with remaining cheese sauce.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil.

Bake for 1 hour in the preheated 400 degree oven. So good!

  3. I made this as a side dish with the Easy Lemon Chicken. We did don't really like onions (well I don't lol) so I decided to get creative as the chef and used breadcrumbs instead of onions. It gives the dish a different and interesting texture. It was really easy and very delicious! Great Recipe I'll try this again for sure!
